Book Review - To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Jenny Han

Hey, everyone!
Here's my review of, "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" by Jenny Han.

Insight into the book (from GOODREADS)
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the story of Lara Jean, who has never openly admitted her crushes, but instead wrote each boy a letter about how she felt, sealed it, and hid it in a box under her bed. But one day Lara Jean discovers that somehow her secret box of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her sister's ex-boyfriend, Josh. As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara Jean discovers that something good may come out of these letters after all.

I've had this book on my TBR shelf for probably, over a month.  I bought it without looking at any reviews, along with a couple other books.  Once I got home, I looked up reviews and feedback about this book, and it made me pause on whether I wanted to read it right away.  I ended up forgetting about it for some time, and leaving it on my shelf without a second glance.
I picked it up yesterday, before I left for a six hour car ride to California.  I'm trying to dwindle down my TBR shelf :)  I finished it on the ride, and here's what I think . . .

As for characters, I didn't find myself connecting at all with any of them.  The main female character, Lara Jean, struck me more as a desperate, annoying 12-13 year old, than a junior in high-school.  At many points, her nine year old sister acted more mature than her.  As for the oldest sister, Margot, that's in college, she was reasonable in the beginning.  Always taking care of her sisters, and making sure that her father is always happy.  Towards the end, her character changes into a brat, and it really, really made me sad, because she was one of the few characters I thought might be likable.  All of the secondary characters seemed sooooo typical, and that really ruined a lot of the book for me.

The story-line had the potential to be enjoyable, and entertaining.  After all, that's all I was going for.  A sweet, happy, road-trip read, but I just kept on finding more and more flaws in this book.
Am I the only one that found numerous sentence errors?  Not only that, but even the romance was flawed.  It was seriously a half-hearted love-triangle, that at times, didn't even make the slightest sense.

I haven't read anything else by Jenny Han, and I'm sad that this book is my first impression of her writing.  I've heard great things about, "The Summer I Turned Pretty," so I hope that soon I'll give another book of hers a chance.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I actually enjoyed this book more than you did but I can see where some of it could be disappointing. Maybe you'll like something else of hers. This one was my first.

  2. Thanks for the kind comment you left on my blog! =D I've followed you.

I've heard really mixed reviews of this book. And since I've been meaning to read a Jenny Han book - everyone seems to praise her - I guess I'll end up skipping this one and starting with her other series. Thanks for the heads up on it!
